About Our Foundations

A GIFT OF HEALTH:
WINDBER MEDICAL CENTER

"The true power of healing lies in the hearts of the people providing the care."

In the past, (and still at many hospitals), the approach to healthcare had been strictly medical. In other words, the focus was on using medical techniques to treat illness and injury. At Windber Medical Center, our approach to healthcare is one of the most innovative in the country—a combination of high tech and high touch that combines cutting edge talent and technology with proven, prevention-based programs that encourage healthy lifestyles.

A GIFT OF COMFORT:
WINDBER HOSPICE

"I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you".

John 14:18

In the past, the practice of medicine offered little for those who were beyond its help. Yet even if one is dying, one is not dead. There is still care to be given. It is just the focus and aim of the care that adjusts accordingly.

The focus of Hospice Care is to offer the highest possible quality of life to the terminally ill and to their families. Windber Hospice provides symptom and pain control for the patient and emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families. Hospice provides something precious to them: COMFORT.

Give a gift of comfort:

The Comfort of Peace

… by easing pain and discomfort.

The Comfort of Home

… most hospice patients die in the familiar surroundings of their own homes.

The Comfort of Rest

… for the families of the dying. When the burden of caring for a dying loved one becomes too much, or special care is needed, Windber Hospice offers a short term stays in our homelike, in-patient palliative care unit.

The Comfort of Knowing

… We fear what we do not know. As death nears, knowing what to expect and having a hospice volunteer there to lend comfort eases the passing of a loved one.

A GIFT OF CARE:
JOYCE MURTHA BREAST CARE CENTER

"Breast health from a new perspective: yours."

Of all the programs affiliated with the Windber Medical Center, few provide a better reflection of our high tech/high touch approach to health care. While your donation provides on-going support for the acquisition of cutting edge diagnosis, treatment and research programs, you will also be supporting an environment and philosophy of healing. Your support of JMBCC gives women a place where they can be treated as a whole person—cared for in mind, body and spirit.

To put it in simpler terms, you will be improving the quality of women's lives. You will be helping to save women's lives. You will be saving the lives of other people's wives, mothers, sisters and daughters. It's really that simple.

Your help will directly benefit others, will improve the quality of life in the community, will brighten the future and will be appreciated and wisely used. The links below will tell you exactly how you can share your…

A GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE:
WINDBER RESEARCH INSTITUTE

"There is something happening here that is bigger than all of us."

A gift to benefit the future:

It is hard to appreciate what we do not see. We do not appreciate those who walk among us who would be dead, crippled or disfigured but are not. There are literally millions of them: people who did not die from small pox, malaria, meningitis or pneumonia... people who whose lives were not shattered by polio or tuberculosis.

How did all those people come to be alive and well today? Because years ago, people like you offered their support to the researchers who found cures and treatments for those diseases. Think about it. If not for them, how many of us would be lost or suffering today?

The work of the Windber Research Institute will save lives and improve the quality of untold numbers of lives in the future. Health problems now in the cross-hairs of WRI are finding cures for breast and ovarian cancer; identifying cures and treatments for arthritis and obesity; and uncovering the causes of aging and menopause. When these efforts succeed, think of lives that will be saved and improved because of the work you supported.

A gift to benefit the present:

If is important to you to give a gift that will have a more immediate impact on your neighbor's lives, the Windber Research Institute has plenty of programs that you can support. In their efforts to understand aging, WRI scientists are conducting a long-term longitudinal study of area residents. Teaching modules are being developed for use in local high school science programs. There is always new equipment to purchase and existing equipment to maintain and upgrade. Donations to the tissue bank and the participation of doctors in the region are always appreciated and encouraged. All these efforts take time, effort and funds. Contact WRI for additional ways that you may be able to help them in their work.
